This morning’s Sunday morning Cruising is a focus on Trumpets. Trumpets for me are amazingly diverse with a range that just bedazzles you with their pitch. I have chosen 3 pieces this morning, Clarke’s The Prince of Denmark’s March, the third movement of Hummell’s Trumpet Concerto in Eb and finally to add a bit of fun to the morning, a performance by Harry James and his band from 1942.
The Prince of Denmark’s March, commonly but erroneously called the Trumpet Voluntary, is a musical composition written about 1699 by Jeremiah Clarke, the first organist of the then newly rebuilt St Paul’s Cathedral. For many years, the piece was attributed incorrectly to his elder, and more widely known, contemporary, Henry Purcell, who was organist of Westminster Abbey. However most of us will recognise it as one of the more popular choices for the Bridal march at weddings.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel – firstly what a name eh? Wikipedia is amazing for random pieces of information, for example – J.N. Hummel was one of the first persons to fight against copy right infringement. Aside from that aspect, listen to this to wake you up a little bit more….
J. N. Hummel – Trumpet Concerto in Eb, 3rd mvt.
Finally Harry James. Well some may know of him – most will not. I know him as the guy who wanted Ol’Blue Eyes to change his name to Frankie Satin….thankfully his musical ability does offset this ever so slightly…

The middle performer’s middle name is also a ‘what’ if English is your first language.

This is true – I wonder if Wikipedia has an answer to that one!
