Counting the Pennies
Counting the Pennies

Well we all know it is upon us. Today, 7th April 2009, the whole country braces itself for what is argued will be one of the tightest and hardest budgets in some time.

So while nobody knows what exactly is coming tomorrow, I think it is pretty safe to say that the “old reliables” of Petrol, Booze and Cigs are all going to be hit. So in order to reduce the impact somewhat and to try to oil the wheels of the economy by spending some money in these recessionary times.

So before the price increases take effect from midnight tonight, here is a list of the cheapest locations for the auld reliables.

Fuel Prices:

According to Pumps.ie today, the best price for petrol in Dublin is the Maxol Petrol Station on Harrold Cross at 104.9cent and its diesel price is at 93.9cent.

Lowest price in the country is in Tesco, in Cahir, with Petrol at 95.9cent and Diesel at 91.9cent.

Booze:

I don’t drink that much personally but I do appreciate that people like to drink. In the last number of weeks, Dunnes and Tesco have been battling it out over cheap booze and below cost price beer. Such as their 24 bottles of Coors/Miller etc for 20squids. There are some good deals out there on wine as well…O’Briens aka wwww.wine.ie have over 35% off most of their stock as an Easter promotion. God only knows where the cheapest pint in the Country is anymore.

Cigs:

This one I have less sympathy for I am afraid….I appreciate it is an addiction etc. However Smoking releated illnesses affect some 7,000 persons in Ireland every year, costing over at a minimum 1 billion in the Health budget every year. Off all the auld reliables, give this one up for all our sakes!

The Department of Finance will have information on the supplementary Budget 2009 on http://www.budget.gov.ie/. There will also be the usual suspects in getting the low-down on how much we can all expect to take a hit from tonight.
